Will Dowdy speaks to members about the upcoming Town Square Concept Design process.

At the November Chapter Meeting at the Loft at Turtles, the Eugene/Springfield Committee on Local Affairs (CoLA) shared its work from 2018 and its vision for 2019.

Issues reviewed from 2018 included affordable housing, support for the work of Better Housing Together, monitoring the River Road corridor planning work, and support for careful planning in the redesign of the Park Blocks/Town Square. Noted were op-ed pieces written and blog entries.

Looking ahead to 2019, CoLA introduced Will Dowdy, Urban Development Manager, City of Eugene. He outlined his vision for a role for AIA-SWO members in the coming months to provide one or more structured peer-review sessions for the Town Square project as it proceeds in its Concept Design process.

CoLA is our voice and forum for education and advocacy on local issues of professional interest. It complements work by AIA National to lobby for legislative change (aia.org: Advocacy) and by AIA Oregon’s Legislative Affairs Committee (currently modernizing QBS, clarifying the definition of statute of limitations as applied to architectural services and working on housing, carbon and resiliency issues).

Current CoLA members include Austin Bailey, AIA, Eric Gunderson, AIA, Katie Hall, AIA, Stan Honn, AIA, Randy Nishimura, AIA and Travis Sheridan. Members are appointed by the AIA-SWO Board for varying terms. If you’re interested in serving in 2019, or would like additional information, please contact current Board President Frank Visconti, AIA.
