AUGUST 2005 - Scott Stolarczyk, AIA
Many of us are initially drawn to architecture for reasons such as its potential for social change or as a way to demonstrate environmental stewardship. This desire in us for bettering the world through the built environment is one that never fully leaves us, but also is not often fully realized. It is all too easy to have many of our better goals and ideals short changed while juggling the ever increasing complexity and demands of our profession and projects.
One strength of our profession is that we do not do it all alone. The make-up of a project design team can at times be as complex as the job itself. But also through great organizations and groups, such as AIA, we have amazing resources around us that can help us to follow through with some of our goals that we might not have the resources to tackle ourselves. This also means we have networks available to connect with and share our own skills towards common goals. Whether your goals be global or local, there is plenty of opportunity to expand your knowledge or put it to action.
Much of our activity in AIA/SWO has been about networking with other members and community recognition through awards programs. However, I believe there is much more we can achieve as a group in our community. Our talents and energy can be brought together to help shape the future of the area or to help others fulfill their own vision. All it takes is a good idea to get going. What was it that initially drew you to architecture? How can AIA/SWO work together to provide a positive contribution to the community and our profession? Let me know what you are passionate about and ways you would like to see it happen. Now is an opportunity to give back to the community and realize our own goals at the same time.
