This Thursday at Three
The AIA-SWO Program Committee is putting the finishing touches on a special February meeting at the University of Oregon. We're only teasing you this week, but you're well advised to keep February 15th open on your calendar.
February 15: Pin-Up
Do you ever wonder what projects Eugene's local architects are working on? If so, mark your calendars to attend February's AIA-SWO Chapter Meeting: The Professional Pin-UP at the University of Oregon. During the Professional Pin-UP local firms will showcase their latest architectural projects and discuss the professional process, architectural concepts, sustainable strategies, and MUCH MORE!
The AIA-SWO invites its members, emerging professionals, and students to share their perspectives and experiences during the Professional Pin-UP at Lawrence Hall. During the Pin-UP local architectural firms including PIVOT Architecture, Paul Dustrud Architect, Robertson|Sherwood|Architects, and Willard C. Dixon Architect will showcase one of their current projects and discuss the design process, the project status, and how they get the job done. Firm presenters will include both the project architect and an emerging professional that is assisting with the project.
The Pin-UP presentations will not only fill you in on what the local architectural community is up to, it will allow members and students to witness the working dynamics within each architecture firm. The presentations will be followed by discussion within groups. During the discussion, groups will be allowed to ask project and firm related questions, and will be encouraged to make project related comments. In addition to presentations by local firms, the local emerging professional group, DesignSpring, will have representatives discuss their experiences and answer questions relating to their professional development and the licensure process.
The event starts with a pizza social at 5:30 and the presentations begin at 6:00. Guests will be broken into smaller groups to create a more relaxed atmosphere and allow for more personal discussions. Do not miss your chance to witness, first hand, what Eugene's architectural community is up to, and be a part of multiple discussions that promote professional development within the community.
See you on February 15th

Energy Trust of Oregon & EWEB Present:
Financial Analysis for Commercial Buildings
Join Energy Trust and EWEB on February 8 for an in-depth look at the concepts and practices involved in assessing the value of energy efficiency investments for commercial buildings.
Presented by Mark Jewell
Wednesday, February 8, 2012 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
(Lunch provided)
This event is free of charge.
This course will focus on applying the principles of financial analysis to assess the value of capital improvement projects for commercial buildings. The instructor will begin by presenting the fundamental concepts involved in financial analysis within this industry. He will then use real-world examples and hands-on exercises to walk attendees through the process of determining the potential value of energy-efficiency investments. Each case study discussion will cover which engineering and financial data points are necessary to consider, where to acquire those data points, which calculation techniques are most applicable and, ultimately, whether or not that particular project deserves to be funded.
We encourage attendees to bring their own examples to the class.
Mark Jewell is a nationally recognized author, coach and speaker focused on applying energy efficiency to create value. Earlier in his career, Mark founded RealWinWin, Inc., an energy consulting firm that specializes in identifying opportunities for and financial analysis to support energy efficiency projects. Prior to his career in energy efficiency, Mark served as Senior V.P. for a major commercial real estate investment firm on the West Coast.

Cash Flow Crunch? Pay AIA Dues Slowly
You value your membership in the AIA but the dues are a little more than you can afford to pay right now. Why not consider the AIA's
Installment Plan and spread payments out - up to six months!
Eligible renewing and new Architect, Associate, and International Associate and Allied (National only) memberships, without regard to hardship, may be enrolled online in the 2012 Dues Installment Program during October 2011 - April 30, 2012. Reinstating and New Graduate memberships, without regard to hardship, may be enrolled through a manual process (a form is available for download).
Please visit www.aia.org/join or www.aia.org/renew and you must enroll online.
Affiliates Wanted
The membership committee started the year with a lofty goal: 90 new affiliate members in 2011. You've probably seen an email or two from Heidi Peschel. A few of you have replied, and she's grateful. The rest of you should expect a phone call from Heidi pretty soon. (If you've worked with Rubensteins Contract Carpet, you know that no one successfully hides from Heidi and her cohorts.)
She's looking for leads, candidates, referrals. Who would you like to see join AIA-SWO as an affiliate? You could save yourself (and Heidi) a little trouble by clicking here. (Thanks.)
