This Thursday at Three
Take a deep breath. November will be a busy month, and it's about to begin. The Craftsmanship Awards will be celebrated on the 16th, this year at the Ford Alumni Center. This year's Register-Guard newspaper campaign is being coordinating to coincide with that event. DesignSpring is planning a three-hour charrette for downtown Springfield business owners on Saturday morning, Nov. 12. And the Northwest & Pacific Region Conference will be underway in Tokyo on Nov. 13, where we expect our own Bill Seider to be elected as a region director.
That may sound like a lot to get done in a single month, but look at it this way. At least you don't have to move your entire office at the same time! Now, THAT would be crazy!
Do You Have Any Recommendations?
Craftsmanship Awards is coming up and we want a little bit of feedback from you!
On November 16 our chapter will host the Craftsmanship Awards program. It will be our opportunity as architects and designers to let the construction industry know that we value their fine craftsmanship. The event will be held at the UO Ford Alumni Center starting at 5:30. Please mark your calendars and plan on joining us at this great event.
The Chapter considers anyone in the construction industry, from the cost estimator, to the fine cabinet maker, to the job site superintendent worthy of this recognition if they have consistently taken that extra step to ensure a finely crafted building.
To date we have received 20 nominees and the supporting background information for these individual varies greatly. Now is your opportunity to help the jury by giving us feedback and references in support of any of these nominees who from your own personal observation and experience you believe should receive a Craftsmanship Award. This year we have received nominations for the following individuals.

Please don't delay. The jury will meet in early November and the committee is assembling each candidate's portfolio, so please respond by the end of the month. (That's Monday!)

DesignSpring Charrette for Springfield
DesignSpring charrette
DesignSpring, supported by AIA-SWO, is offering its first design charrette intended to support the local community. The charrette will be a collaboration between design professionals and active citizens that will result in ideas to enhance building facades and their corresponding streetscape.
The focus of the charrette is Main Street between Pioneer Parkway West and 8th Street in Downtown Springfield. Design teams are to consider the existing conditions, including the historical character of the street, to develop design solutions that improve the pedestrian perspective. The final outcome should convey designs that focus on the area as a whole, as well as that of individual buildings.
We encourage you to participate in the charrette! Your contribution will not only help the local community, it will also help initiate design collaboration that will result in solutions that are tailored to the target area. Final details for the charrette will be send out next week. In addition to the charrette details information relating to the focus area will be included.
To help us better coordinate the event we are asking for participants to RSVP. To RSVP, please email designspringEP@gmail.com.
Thanks,
DesignSpring Leadership

Envision Eugene Code Amendments
Earlier this year, as part of Envision Eugene, the City Council began several land use code amendments that address the compatibility of multi-family developments. The purpose of these amendments is to make changes and clarifications to the code that will help increase neighborhood livability. Based on recommendations from the infill compatibility standards project, a city staff team drafted code language addressing six topic areas. The draft amendments include:
- 1. Multi-Family Open Space Standards: The goal is to increase the amount of open space that is available around high density housing while providing more flexibility on where it can be located.
- 2. Setback Intrusions: The goal is to protect neighborhood aesthetics by clarifying and reducing the size of building features that can project into front and interior yard setbacks for multi-family developments.
- 3. Driveways and Parking Areas: The goal is to protect neighborhood aesthetics by limiting the amount of paving in front and side yards in multi-family zones in the university area.
- 4. Garbage and Recycling Screening for Multi-Family Developments: The goal is to reduce safety concerns around garbage and recycling areas in the University area by allowing the enclosures to be less screened to increase visibility.
- 5. Transition between R-1 and R-3/R-4: The goal is to increase compatibility between the single-family homes and new apartments in south university by providing an additional setback.
- 6. Bicycle Parking Standards: The goal is to make bike parking requirements clearer and easier to meet, while also increasing the amount of bike parking available in the University area.
You are receiving this email because of your involvement in a group or profession associated with neighborhood livability and infill. Because of your knowledge and interest in these areas, your feedback on these draft amendments is very valuable.
The draft code is available for your review via: http://www.eugene-or.gov/codeamendments
Please provide any comments by Monday October 31, 2011. Specific suggestions are much appreciated. Please note that this won't be your only chance to provide comments. There will be additional opportunities during the formal process. Your initial feedback, however, is key in shaping what moves forward to the City Council. Please send your comments to: alissa.h.hansen@ci.eugene.or.us
Affiliates Wanted
The membership committee started the year with a lofty goal: 90 new affiliate members in 2011. You've probably seen an email or two from Heidi Peschel. A few of you have replied, and she's grateful. The rest of you should expect a phone call from Heidi pretty soon. (If you've worked with Rubensteins Contract Carpet, you know that no one successfully hides from Heidi and her cohorts.)
She's looking for leads, candidates, referrals. Who would you like to see join AIA-SWO as an affiliate? You could save yourself (and Heidi) a little trouble by clicking here. (Thanks.)
