Kudos for Craftsmanship Awards
You may not have seen these plaudits for the Craftsmanship Awards, so we thought we would pass them along for your enjoyment.
I was honored to be nominated and humbled to be chosen as one of the receipients of a Craftsmanship award. I want to extend a special 'Thank you' to the Chapter for recognizing individuals within their respective trades that go beyond the norm to create magnificient works of art. It was a wonderful event.
- Mike Nowak
Congratulations to Kurt Albrecht, to the members of his committee, and especially to MC John Lawless for the best Craftsmanship Awards Banquet I can remember - and I have attended every one since 1954.
- Paul Edlund
The event was excellent, from the facility at the Ford Center, to the social, the appetizers, John Lawless was an excellent speaker. Kurt Albreight and the committee put alot into the awards. Thank you for representing our community and it's talented individuals with such splender and respect. Gary Bartel is the most deserving and humble human being I have every met. Congrtulations for recognizing him. He was truly honored.
- Tammy Crafton
Thanks from Springfield
In early November, DesignSpring hosted the Downtown Springfield Design Charrette focusing on simple design improvements to further revitalization efforts and empower business owners in the area. The event was a success with over 30 participants representing business owners, local citizens, design professionals, the Main Street Program, and the City of Springfield. Groups presented improvements ranging from suggestions to enhance the pedestrian experience to storefront and facade modifications and maintenance. DesignSpring is currently working on a final report that will be available digitally to all interested parties. Please contact designspringep@gmail.com for more information or to request a copy of the report.
Do you have a stalled project?
I want to make you aware of an initiative that AIA national is implementing to try and help advance stalled projects. By going to aia.org/stalledprojects you can register projects in a national data base that is able to be reviewed by potential developers and investors. This is something that national is doing to help architects to get projects moving. I would encourage you to look at the site and see if any of your projects fit this initiative.
- Greg Kessler, Region Director
NWP Region Associate Director
We want to bring to your attention an opportunity to become involved in the AIA. At this link - RAD nomination - you will find a call for applications for Northwest and Pacific Region Associate Director. This is an excellent opportunity to become involved in issues of the AIA particularly as it relates to emerging professionals. As Regional Associate Director you will have the opportunity to attend national and regional conferences and to have a direct influence on professional issues that have influence on emerging professionals. As Regional Associate Director you will be a member of the Board of Directors for the Region as well as attend the AIA National Convention, The National Associates Conference as well as Grassroots. As an emerging professional this is a great way to gain entrance into the profession through national venues.
We encourage you to review the application materials and consider applying for this important position. If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact Stan Bowman for further information.

Affiliates Wanted
The membership committee started the year with a lofty goal: 90 new affiliate members in 2011. You've probably seen an email or two from Heidi Peschel. A few of you have replied, and she's grateful. The rest of you should expect a phone call from Heidi pretty soon. (If you've worked with Rubensteins Contract Carpet, you know that no one successfully hides from Heidi and her cohorts.)
She's looking for leads, candidates, referrals. Who would you like to see join AIA-SWO as an affiliate? You could save yourself (and Heidi) a little trouble by clicking here. (Thanks.)
